2025-08-24 Hardly Raining

The annual Wiener Dog and Wannabe Races returned to Emerald Downs on August 24, 2025. Dozens of dogs competed across five qualifying heats, split into Wiener Dog (dachshund) and Wannabe (other dogs under 20 pounds) categories. Between wiener-dog heats, thoroughbred horses raced and the dogs took respite from the 90-degree day under a shaded canopy. See coverage of previous years’ events here.

There were few surprises this year. Three-time Wiener Dog defending champion “Luca” earned his fourth victory, sprinting ahead of the pack with his unusually long stride. Luca is trained by Alex & Alexandra Borowiecki of Seattle. The Wiener Wannabe winner was “Arlo the Long Boi,” who had placed second last year. Arlo is trained by Jamie Jensen of Auburn.
